The genetic engineering team of undergraduate students of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), including Miss Liu Jiaxun, a 3rd year student in the BSc in Biomedical Sciences Programme of the School of Biomedical Sciences (SBS), was awarded a Gold medal at the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) 2019 Giant Jamboree held on 31 October to 4 November 2019 in Boston, U.S.A.

The 2019 CUHK iGEM team consists of 12 students majoring in interdisciplinary fields from SBS, School of Life Sciences, and Department of Biomedical Engineering. In the awarded project named “Banana Savior: The X Sense”, a rapid test for a new disease Banana Xanthomonas Wilt (BXW) is designed with a hope that the novel design can help farmers in Africa and quarantine departments to realise early detection of the disease and help stop it from spreading.

Miss Liu Jiaxun is the awardee of Lo Kwee-Seong Biomedical Research Fund – Activity Award, which aims to recognize her contribution and support her participation in the activity. We sincerely congratulate Miss Liu on his exceptional academic performance and wish her every success in her future academic endeavors.
